Visualizing Media Usage throughout Afghanistan

Mapping and Documenting Access Trends and Consumption Patterns

Afghanistan’s media can play a crucial role in the future of the country. By informing citizens, by providing opportunities for discussion, and by holding those in power to account, the media has a substantial role to play in developing good governance. It can also aid economic growth and contribute to better understanding of issues in many humanitarian and development sectors. To help explore the extent and variation in media usage around Afghanistan, this site visualizes Altai Consulting’s comprehensive 2010 Media Research (full report).

Results are displayed across each province by use of radio, television, mobile phone and internet, and broken down by gender and location type where relevant. All 2010 population data is from the Central Statistics Organization. Interviews were not allowed with women in the following provinces: Wardak, Paktya, Kunar, Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan.

Additional disaggregation of data by youth and gender is available in the companion Internews Initatives site, along with other Internews moitoring and evaluation and project activity information.
